Brandon's Green Business Award is an initiative launched by the City of Brandon and the Brandon Chamber of Commerce to recognize local businesses that demonstrate outstanding efforts in sustainability, water conservation, green infrastrucutre or transportation, waste reduction -- and more! The award aims to celebrate businesses that go beyond their regular operations to introduce innovative sustainability practices. These practices should be new initiatives that are not required by law and focus on environmental impact (Not mandated due to a federal, provincial, or municipal law, by-law or other body of rules.)

Examples of green initiatives include:

  • Becoming a fair-trade workplace or retailer  
  • Switching to energy efficient appliances, lighting, building envelope  
  • Creative ways to reuse or recycle goods, products, materials etc. 
  • Encourage or implement a green commuting strategy 
  • Water conservation, installing rain barrels or rain gardens
  • Habitat protection, green landscaping, planting native species, pollinator-friendly practices

Locally-based businesses of any size within Brandon’s city limits are eligible and the competition usually run through the month of October. The selected winner will receive an award certificate, a Fair Trade coffee break hosted by the Chamber of Commerce and City and will be featured on the City’s social media platforms.

Past winners have included local businesses such as The Green Spot Home and Garden, which focuses on recycling and composting, and Brandon University Physical Plant, which has implemented various sustainable practices.
