One of City Council’s priorities includes addressing the long-term impact and sustainability of the environment. As stewards of our community, it is important for us to do our parts to minimize our impact on our environment and to assist where we can, to create a green community.

As part of our efforts, the City of Brandon hired consulting company Urban Systems in 2022 to help develop a Climate Change Action Plan for Brandon, aimed at both reducing our impact on the environment and adapting to a changing climate.

On May 15, 2023 Brandon City Council officially adopted the Climate Change Action Plan.

Some of the key action items in the Climate Change Action Plan include:

  • Updating the corporate and community greenhouse gas emissions inventories
  • Assessing potential risks to Brandon based on projected climate changes
  • Conducting research on best practices related to climate action from similar municipalities
  • Engaging with various stakeholders including Brandon leadership, staff, community organizations and the public
  • Establishing emission reduction targets and pathways, and
  • Identifying Big Moves, strategies, and actions to reduce emissions and adapt to a changing climate

All of the information gathered was organized into different themes and actions, illustrated as 7 big moves:

1. Become a Carbon Free Corporation

2. Transition to Renewable Energy

3. Rethink Transportation

4. Build Resilient Infrastructure

5. Conserve and Protect Nature

6. Prepare for Emergencies & Recovery

7. Consume and Produce Sustainably

The Climate Change Action Plan is to replace and build off of the Environmental Strategic Plan, which was last updated in 2013.

Over the past fifteen years, Brandon has had numerous environmental successes, including the green cart program, residential rain garden program, landfill gas collection, and a fair-trade town status designation. Brandon is also proud to have several “firsts,” including the first Bee City in Manitoba, the first Manitoba City to have a Brownfield Strategy, and the first community in Manitoba to complete all five milestones of the Partners for Climate Protection Program

We appreciate your participation in this important initiative and look forward to working together to create a sustainable future for Brandon.
