Brandon became a Fair Trade Town on May 20th, 2014, and is proud to be the 19th municipality in Canada—and the second in Manitoba—to receive this honor. For three consecutive years, Brandon has been named Fair Trade Town of the Year! Special thanks to the Marquis Project for their leadership in bringing the Fair Trade movement to Brandon.
What does Fair Trade mean?
Fair Trade is more than just a label—it’s a movement that champions fairness, ethics, and responsibility in business. It ensures that the people behind the products we purchase receive a fair deal, from fair wages to sustainable working conditions. When you see a Fair Trade certified product, you know that the farmers and producers were paid a fair price, followed responsible labor and environmental practices, and even received a premium to reinvest in their communities and businesses. Each Fair Trade purchase is a chance for you to make a positive impact on the world, one product at a time.
What are the standards?
Fair Trade standards are grounded in three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental. The goals of these standards include:
- Ensuring producers receive a Fair Trade minimum price that guarantees financial stability.
- Providing an additional Fair Trade premium, which supports social, economic, and environmental community projects.
- Offering pre-financing for producers in need of capital to grow their business.
- Promoting long-term, mutually beneficial trade relationships.
- Setting clear, progressive criteria to ensure that production and trade are socially fair, economically just, and environmentally responsible
What is a Fair Trade Town?
A Fair Trade Town is a community where citizens wholeheartedly embrace Fair Trade values. It’s a place where consumers, vendors, and advocates unite to support global change. To earn Fair Trade Town status, a municipality must achieve six key goals:
- Gaining political support at the local level
- Forming a Fair Trade Town Steering Committee
- Ensuring availability of Fair Trade products
- Garnering community support
- Educating the public about Fair Trade
- Sustaining momentum for ongoing advocacy
