Update: Four BCC inmates arrested following weekend assault

On Sunday February 21, 2021, BPS released that police responded to a report of an assault, which occurred at Brandon Correctional Centre on an inmate on February 20, 2021.

Following an investigation into the incident, members of BPS Major Crime Section arrested four inmates from Brandon Correctional Centre on February 23, 2021.  They will appear in court today, each with a charge of Assault with a Weapon.  They include a 24-year-old male, a 28-year-old male, a 22-year-old male, and a 26-year-old male.

The victim was treated for his injuries on February 20, 2021 and released from medical care the following day.  The injuries consisted of upper body contusions and lacerations. 

Original release from Feb. 21, 2021:

 At 3:40 p.m. yesterday, police received a report of an assault against an inmate in custody at the Brandon Correctional Centre. The assault took place within the adult male section of the jail, resulting in the victim being transported to the Brandon Regional Health Centre by ambulance.  The victim remains in hospital at this time with non-life threatening injuries. Several other inmates physically assaulted the victim by beating him with their fists and feet, as well as with other objects at their disposal, which included jail furniture. The Major Crime Section and Forensic Identification Section were called out to conduct the investigation. This matter remains an active investigation, and more details may be released in the days to come.

 

Breach of Peace

On February 23, 2021, shortly after 7:00 am, police responded to a residence after receiving reports from individuals who were concerned about the behavior of a 26-year-old male who was under the influence of drugs.  There was nobody who was able to prevent the male’s destructive behavior from continuing or escalating.  To prevent the male from causing further harm, he was lodged at Brandon Police Service until sober.

On February 23, 2021, at approximately 10:00 pm, police responded to a residence, where a 15-year-old male youth was physically attacking the adults within the residence.  To prevent anyone from further harm due to the escalation of the youth’s behavior, he was arrested and lodged at Brandon Police Service until the adults in the home could manage his behavior safely.  

On February 24, 2021 at approximately 3:00 am, police arrested a 27-year-old male in an apartment building after he continued to cause a disturbance for the other residents by knocking on their doors and being disruptive in the hallways.  He was given the opportunity to return to his own apartment, but his behavior continued.  He was arrested and lodged at Brandon Police Service until sober. 

 

Possess Meth / Heroin

On February 23, 2021 shortly after 4:00 pm, police conducted a vehicle stop in the 500 block of 6th street.  Police observed unstamped cigarettes within the vehicle.  Further investigation led to the discovery of small quantities of Cocaine, Meth and Heroin.  The 35-year-old female driver was arrested and released to appear in court on April 8, 2021 on charges of Possess Cocaine, Possess Meth and Possess Heroin.

 

IPDA

On February 23, 2021, police located a 44-year-old intoxicated male near Brandon Police Service.  The male indicated he had nowhere safe to stay, and there was nobody to care for him.  He was lodged at Brandon Police Service until sober.

On February 24, 2021 shortly after 2:00 pm, police responded to a report of an intoxicated individual in the 200 block of McDiarmid Dr.  The 58-year-old male had nobody to care for him, and he was unable to look after himself.  He was lodged at Brandon Police Service until sober.

 

Arrest Warrants

On February 23, 2021, two youth attended to Brandon Police Service, as they were aware of outstanding arrest warrants for their arrest.  A 13-year-old female, and 15-year-old male were arrested and later released to appear in court on March 25, 2021 on charges of Mischief Under $5000.  They were turned over to their guardians.
