Tuesday February 9, 2021 is Safer Internet Day.

Over the last year, Brandon Police Service has received dozens of reports and complaints regarding threats, blackmail, intimidation or the sharing of intimate images online.  Victims of these crimes are from all demographics, but our youth and children are particularly vulnerable.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection has provided a series of online information and videos to educate parents and youth in the area of online safety.  For your convenience, we have provided the links below.

An important piece of this information addresses sextortion.  What is sextortion, how does it happen, and how to prevent it.  This information is also relative to adults, as many of the victims Brandon Police Service hear from are over 18-years-old.

“The following videos are part of the Kids in the Know: Healthy Relationships lesson for high school. Dr. Michael Salter, a criminologist from Australia, takes us through topics such as boundaries, sexual consent, stereotypes, and healthy versus unhealthy behaviours in relationships.”

The following blog contains information for parents on how to speak with children and youth about pornography.

“Here’s the stripped down reality caregivers – if your kids are online, they are seeing pornography. In fact, according to Noni Classen, Director of Education for the Canadian Centre for Child Protection (C3P) kids likely as early as eight to ten years old are coming across this content.”
