New Event Eligibility & Guidelines

This category is typically suitable for applicants looking to bring an existing event to Brandon that has not been held in the City for at least three consecutive calendar years or create a brand new event to be held in Brandon. To be eligible for an Accommodation Tax Grant, an event must generate overnight stays in Brandon.

In addition to the general guidelines found here (General Guidelines), the following apply to New Event funding applications.

  • To be eligible for Accommodation Tax funding under the category “New Event”, the event for which funding is being sought must have never been hosted in Brandon or be an event that has been held in Brandon in the past but has not been held in the City for at least three consecutive event years. Event years are defined as 3 consecutive regular rotational years that an event has been held in Brandon such as annual, biennial, triennial, or other regular frequency.

For example, if an event receives an Accommodation Tax grant for two or more years as a new event based on a rotational frequency such as every second year, and then the event ceases to be hosted in Brandon, the event would not be eligible for “New Event” funding for six consecutive years from the year in which the event was last held in Brandon.  2 year event rotation x 3 years = 6 years.

  • Events that have never been held in Brandon and generate overnight stays (limited to hotel/motel rooms, Brandon University, B&B rooms) may receive funding for a maximum of 3 consecutive event years, with the approved funding paid out after the final report has been received following each event year and projected room nights realized. Event years are defined as 3 consecutive regular rotational years that an event will be held in Brandon such as annual, biennial, triennial, or other regular frequency.

If an event is approved for multiple year “New Event” funding based on an established rotational frequency such as every 2nd year, but after the first year the event is not held in Brandon, then the event is considered to be an annual event and would not be eligible for “New Event” funding for 3 consecutive years following the year in which the event last occurred in Brandon.

  • Only events that align with Brandon First marketing strategies are eligible to apply for Accommodation Tax event hosting grants.  Personal events such as socials, weddings, and family celebrations are ineligible for Accommodation Tax Grant funding.  If you are in doubt as to eligibility for an event hosting grant, please contact Brandon First at 204.729.2156 or info@brandonfirst.com
