Identity Fraud

One year ago, on May 30, 2020, police responded to a report of the theft of a wallet and ID.  A suspect at the time used a credit card from the wallet at numerous Brandon businesses.  On June 21, 2020, a now 40-year-old male was arrested after having been identified from security footage making the purchases.  The ID in the wallet from the theft was not recovered at that time.

One year later, on May 30, 2021, the owner of the stolen ID contacted police to report that someone used his stolen ID to acquire hotel accommodations.  The victim received an email from the hotel thanking him for using their business, when he never had.  Police attended to the business and located the suspect who was still checked into the hotel.

The suspect was arrested for possession of the stolen ID.  He was also found to be in possession of a small amount of Meth and another set of stolen ID from an individual in Saskatchewan.  The suspect provided police with a false name to avoid charges.  Further investigation by police revealed his identity.

The new suspect arrested in May 2021 for being in possession of the stolen ID is not the same suspect who was arrested in June 2020 for using the stolen credit card.

On January 31, 2021, police responded to a report from a local towing company of a suspicious vehicle they were asked to pick up.  The individual who requested the vehicle towed advised the towing company he would come back to pay for the service, but never he did come back.  Police learned that the vehicle was stolen from Saskatchewan.  Further investigation revealed the identity of the male suspect who was in possession of the stolen vehicle; however, he was not located or arrested for this incident until his arrest in connection to the identity fraud on May 30, 2021.

The 39-year-old male suspect from Winnipeg was lodged at Brandon Police Service and will appear in court today on charges of Identity Fraud to Gain Advantage, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime X3 (for 2 separate stolen IDs and 1 stolen vehicle), Public Mischief, Possess Meth, and Fail to Comply with Release Order X6.

The male was arrested and lodged at Brandon Police Service to appear in court later in the day on a charge of Fail to Comply with Release Order.

Assault

On May 30, 2021 shortly before 9:00 am, police responded to a residence following reports of a dispute.  Investigation revealed that a 22-year-old male assaulted a victim following an argument.  The male was arrested and later released to appear in court on August 30, 2021 on a charge of assault.  The victim did not require medical attention.
