Collection FAQs

Recycling will be collected every week on your regular collection day.

There will be collections on all holidays, except for Remembrance Day, Christmas day and New Years Day. If it falls on any of those days, it will be moved to Saturday.

If you have a medium cart, you can request a large cart. However, single residential homes cannot get an additional cart.

No, the carts cannot overflow, or material cannot stick out.

Multi-unit dwellings typically have private collection contracts. Please check with your property manager or superintendent.

The City of Brandon uses a four-day collection cycle which runs from Tuesday to Friday each week. Residents’ collection day stays constant throughout the year.

A map of collection routes is available above. Maps can also be mailed out, on request, by contacting the City of Brandon’s Solid Waste Section.

Yes, this is true. Changes to the Solid Waste Collection and Disposal Bylaw now require residents with back lane refuse, recycling, and compost (if applicable) pick-up to store the carts assigned to them on their property on non-collection days. Residents will be required to place their cart in the back laneway no more than 12 hours prior to the start of collection day (6 p.m.) and must return the carts to their property no more than 24 hours after being emptied on collection day (4 p.m.).

Non-compliance relating to the removal of carts from back lanes on non-collection days will result in residents first being warned and then potentially fined, up to a maximum of $1,000 per offense. It is important to note that the owner of the property to which a cart is issued would be considered in non-compliance of the by-law, not the occupier of the property a bin is located on.

Non-compliance can be reported by calling the Solid Waste Section.

The City of Brandon provides a free set-out, set-back service for individuals who can supply an appropriate medical note indicating there is no able-bodied person at their residence to perform such a task. To apply for the free set-out, set-back service, you can download an application form here.

You can also pick up an application form from the Eastview Landfill, located at 3300 Victoria Avenue East, from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No, there have been no changes to what is considered acceptable refuse, recyclable, and compostable materials at the Eastview Landfill’s Materials Recovery Facility, however, to aid in the City’s continuing efforts to reach its goal of a 50% waste diversion rate away from the Landfill, all residents are encouraged to refresh themselves on what is and isn’t acceptable to place in their blackblue, and green carts.

Collection Guide

  • Collection carts should be placed out for collection by 6AM on your collection day
  • Ensure the lids of the carts can full close
  • Do not place any excess material around the carts
  • Carts must be placed at least .5m apart
  • Carts must be placed at least 1.5ft from other obstacles like vehicles or buildings
  • Carts should always be moved to a secure location on your property after collection (lost or stolen carts are the responsibility of the property owner)
  • Ensure you are placing the right items in the right carts
  • Items such as: construction/renovation materials, lumber, drywall, concrete, windows/doors, sod, tree branches/logs, hazardous waste, automotive waste, metal, tires are not accepted in any of the collection carts

Failure to follow the above may result in no collection and/or subject to compliance violations per Solid Waste Collection and Disposal By-law 6965 and Compliance by-law 7198.

Cart Placement

Please follow these quick steps to get ready for collection day:

1. Fill it: Place garbage in garbage bags and then in your black cart (recyclables should be loose inside your blue cart, and compost may be placed loose in your green cart, if applicable). The only exception is placing shredded paper inside a clear plastic bag.

Your carts are considered full when another garbage bag will not easily fit inside. Never place excess material above the rim of the cart or beside your cart.

2. Park it: Move cart to where the collection trucks can access it. Place cart out for collection no more than 12 hours prior to the start of collection day (6 a.m.), but only when full to save time and energy.

Place wheels against front curb or at least a 30cm (1 ft.) from your back hedge or fence. If you can open the lid without hitting any obstructions, you have successfully left enough space behind it.

Park it on flat ground at road level with the arrows on the lid toward the centre of road and ensure you are not blocking traffic.

3. Space it: Leave enough space between carts and other objects, as well as enough space to walk between your black, blue, and green carts.

There should be at least three metres (10 ft.) of space above your carts.

Please ensure your carts are at least .5 m (1.5 ft.) from obstacles on either side, such as parked cars, power poles, utility boxes, fences, downspouts, and garages. If these requirements are not met your cart may not be picked up.

4. Store it: Always return your carts to your property for storage.

Pull your empty garbage cart and recycling cart back onto your property by 4 p.m. the day following your collection, i.e. Tuesday pickup carts should be removed and stored by 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

You are responsible for taking care of your cart and keeping it clean.

Notes:

  • Carts must be stored on your property behind your fence or shrubs. If stored on your property but on the lane side of fence or shrubs the property, owner is responsible for stolen or damaged carts at all times.
  • If you have a green cart, all the above rules apply to the use of the green cart as it does for your blue and black carts.
  • In the winter, do not place carts on the top of or behind piles of snow.

Cart Maintenance

Wash your carts with a mild detergent as required. To clean your carts properly:

  1. Pour a bucket of hot water into the cart.
  2. Swish and empty the water in your garden or lawn, but try to keep the water away from sidewalks and walkways.
  3. Ensure the cart is dry before placing new material inside.
